HR Industry practices

HR practices and policies are the roadmaps, guidelines and the work areas around which the HR department revolves around. The HR department makes policies and practices keeping in mind the overall organizational goals.

The HR practices generally revolves around set of practices which are applicable to almost all the industries. We have tried to list out the most important practices which are prevalent in today’s scenario;

 Workplace – Safe, healthy and happy

Every employee spends entire days’ time at the workplace, in that giving them a happy workplace is essential to make them feel comfortable and efficient. Be it a factory, be it a shop or be it an office, a workplace which offers safety along with hygienic conditions are often loved by employees. Saying that, safety comes first in all cases, especially where manufacturing activities are carried out, the organizations need to ensure proper safety alarms, fire extinguishers are in place at designated places.

 Rewards policy linked to performance

The organizations need to have clearly defined policy about awarding bonuses or including a variable component in compensation as a part of incentive. The HR policy should clearly state out the terms and conditions of Bonus payment, like employees should understand that there is no payout of bonus or incentive unless the company hits a certain level of profitability. In that case, the chances of disputes on account of nonpayment of bonus even if performance targets are achieved, would be less.

 Performance management feedback system

Every employee is subjected to undergo performance appraisals and post the appraisals it is important to take feedbacks. The system of feedback systems collects feedback from the employee’s seniors (including the boss), peers, and even subordinates. This way the feedback is collected in a 360 degree way which is expected to unbiased and practical. This system makes every employee in the team responsible for giving relevant, positive and constructive feedback.

  Fair & Just evaluation system

The organizations must develop an evaluation system aligned with individual performance to corporate business goals and priorities. The reporting system should be transparent and well-defined. Evaluation system is fair and just, if it is based on achievements on year basis. A fair and just evaluation system also calls for performance appraisal from hierarchy of higher levels and not just immediate reporting boss.

  Knowledge sharing management system

The organizations can develop knowledge sharing portal wherein access to information, training programs, database and study material is available. It should be important to keep updating the portal after every training program, if any employees have attended within or outside the organization. Posting of innovative ideas (implemented at the work place) should also be promoted on these knowledge sharing platforms.

  Employee open discussion forum

Every organizations is required to recognize, nurture and execute great ideas for developing the product, services or even for improving work condition’s. Since employees are the biggest source of ideas and they know the company’s internal mechanism better than the outsiders, it is a wise decision to invite ideas from employees at the first.

The organizations should develop a platform and appropriate mechanism to invite and value right ideas. The organizations must conduct open house discussions, employee- management meets and have suggestion boxes to invite ideas from employees.

  Employee resource centre

Every organizations is required to recognize, nurture and execute great ideas for developing the product, services or even for improving work condition’s. Since employees are the biggest source of ideas and they know the company’s internal mechanism better than the outsiders, it is a wise decision to invite ideas from employees at the first.

The employees should have access to a resource centre wherein information about contracts, sales, new clients, management objectives, company policies, employee personal data etc. is available. The resource centre helps in making people interested in strategic decisions and is well informed about their colleagues and organization as a whole. Employee self-service portal, manager on-line etc. are some tools available today to practice this style.
