Human resource department comprises of many functions which are co related to each other. In large organizations wherein the employee’s strength is high and where employees work remotely across the globe, the HR department functions are divided as per roles. The recruitment section, the employee relations section, the payroll section, transfer and attrition and all different functions and the team is also divided as per their area of expertise.

 Payroll and compensation

The HR professionals are responsible for designing a fair and just salary, wages and compensation policy. The HR team therefore needs to be updated about the Wages and Payment Acts, timely revisions and updations in the Act and all the rules governing the payroll, overtime payment and other compensation. The HR professionals thus need to undergo training from time to time to keep updated with the laws and regulations.

 Workplace and safety measures

Every workplace must follow standards specific to their industry. The HR department has to ensure adherence of safety and security measurements are implemented at all the workplaces, be it a factory, be it a commercial office space, the safety and security standards are to be met. The HR team, thus needs to be trained with respect to the organization’s policies which are in line with the State/Central Government policies.

 Professional Development of employees

Learning and development is an ongoing function in every organization. The HR team need to analyze the skill gap areas of all the employees and make training plans based on the skill gaps. The HR team therefore needs to be updated with the latest innovations, development in the functions of the organization and make training plans to upgrade their employees. The employees contribute more in the productivity of the organization, wherein the organization takes care of their learning and professional growth.

Employee engagement programs are emerging as the latest trend to reduce the attrition rate and keep the employees engaged with the organization. The HR team faces a lot of challenges in designing employee engagement programs which are different from other organizations and therefore attract attention of more employees. The HR team thus undergoes workshops, training seminars to learn newer techniques of employee engagement initiatives. It becomes responsibility of the HR team to design a unique program as well implement in a way which drags attention of maximum employees and they feel connected with the organization.

  Performance management

Every organizations is required to recognize, nurture and execute great ideas for developing the product, services or even for improving work condition’s. Since employees are the biggest source of ideas and they know the company’s internal mechanism better than the outsiders, it is a wise decision to invite ideas from employees at the first.

The organizations should develop a platform and appropriate mechanism to invite and value right ideas. The organizations must conduct open house discussions, employee- management meets and have suggestion boxes to invite ideas from employees.

Every employee wants a fair and just performance evaluation system. Developing the same is not an easy task. The performance management is a critical and sensitive function, which calls for highly experienced and trained professional. The organization should ensure that the HR team which is involved in making and implementing the performance appraisal system is highly trained and understands every aspect of performance evaluation.

Since the functions of Human resource department are vast and critical, it is important to provide training to every HR team member. The HR team which is highly skilled and trained, will be able to keep the employees engaged and satisfied which in turn will help in improving the organization’s overall productivity. The HR team which is not updated with the latest regulations affecting human resources, which is not updated with the automation systems of HR department, tends to fall short in keeping the employees happy and productive.
